SPANAWAY, WA — The Pierce County Council is moving ahead on a plan to create a new Lake Management District to better maintain Spanaway Lake. Council members unanimously voted Tuesday to approve Resolution No. R2021-57, signaling their intention to create the new "Spanaway Lake Management District No. 1." As the resolution explains, the management district gives property owners living along the lake an official governmental mechanism they can use to improve and maintain the lake. The resolution was adopted at the request of several of those property owners, who circulated a petition asking the council to create a new district. If approved as is, the new district would be funded by rates and charges on the surrounding neighborhood, which would raise a combined total of between $100,000 and $200,000 annually. That money would go to improve the water quality, fight invasive species and manage waterfowl living on the lake. The boundaries of the proposed district are shown in the map below: Because the petition only gathered the signatures of around 20 percent of the homeowners who live on the water, the management district is yet not a done deal.
