Animal Shelter Drive To Be Held In West Haven

WEST HAVEN, CT — Apple Oil Company, Star Distributors, Inc., and West Haven Councilman Barry Lee Cohen are joining together to hold a "West Haven BARKS and Meows" animal food and supplies drive. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 22 at the Off Shore Restaurant & Lounge parking lot. All donations will benefit the West Haven Animal Shelter. Located at 852 Jones Hill Road, West Haven, the restaurant's parking lot provides a safe, socially distanced opportunity for the local community to donate to the West Haven Animal Shelter. "Wearing facemasks and gloves, event volunteers will be at the ready, requesting that drivers pop open their trunks for quick retrieval of donations," a news release states. Items highly coveted by the animal shelter include dog, cat, and kitten food (wet and dry), dog and cat treats, cat litter, dog toys (for tough chewers), bully sticks, cat beds, slip leads, pee pads, and feliway diffusers. Checks made payable to West Haven Animal Shelter will also be accepted. "Both Sam Livieri, Jr., President of Apple Oil, and Tony Gallo, President of Star Distributors, enthusiastically signed up to sponsor this event," Cohen said. "Both lead long-established and respected West Haven businesses that have a proud history of supporting charitable causes throughout our community. Apple and Star are just two more reasons why West Haven Rocks!" Last November, Yale West Campus and Cohen sponsored a "West Haven Rocks WHEAT" food drive where more than 3,000 pounds of food and over $2,500 was collected on behalf of the West Haven Emergency Assistance Task Force. Mark Laoue, owner of Off Shore Restaurant also provided his premises for and a donation to this successful event. "Mark never says no," Cohen said. "He always asks, 'How can I help?' He is a low-key guy with an unwavering commitment to West Haven." Apple Oil is located at 325 Morgan Lane and has been delivering premium home heating oil to residential and commercial oil heat customers in Fairfield and New Haven counties for over 50 years.
