For six months, healthcare workers filmed inside this unit providing a rare look at the front lines of the battle against COVID-19. Inside the Covid Unit follows two healthcare workers as they risk their lives to save coronavirus patients, while also struggling to keep each other and their families safe. Along the way, we meet Dianne Washington, whose husband is diagnosed with COVID-19, only weeks after she loses her son to the same virus. Meanwhile, protesters argue against wearing masks and declare this virus a hoax. Then, summer hits, cases surge, and these healthcare workers struggle with one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the nation. This five-part documentary series spans April - October 2020. It is told through the lens of America’s changing landscape as states begin to open up, with no COVID-19 vaccine in sight. Meet Reshma Kirpalani Reshma Kirpalani is a 12-time Lone Star Emmy award-winning journalist. At the age of 3, she immigrated to South Florida from Paramaribo, Suriname, in South America, which is still her favorite place on Earth. After attending the University of Miami, she began her journalism career at a community newspaper in Boca Raton. In 2012, she got her master’s degree in photojournalism at the University of Texas at Austin, and started as a part-time, night-shift visual journalist for the Austin American-Statesman. Kirpalani was the first visual journalist to win a Lone Star Emmy award for the Statesman. She went on to win 11 more regional Emmys for that newspaper. Kirpalani joined McClatchy, the Miami Herald’s parent company, in 2018 as part of the four-person team that produced a real-time episodic documentary about the U.S. Senate race between Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz — the closest race in Texas in 40 years. She then moved to Washington D.C., where she produced visual stories in partnership with McClatchy's 30 newsrooms across the country. The pandemic brought Kirpalani back to South Florida, where she helped the Miami Herald cover the impact of COVID-19, including historic levels of unemployment and high numbers of cruise ship deaths. Inside the COVID Unit is Kirpalani’s directorial debut and will be screened for the public inside IPC ArtSpace on Friday, May 21, 2021 at 7 PM.
