TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Pine Beach teen was injured Tuesday when he was impaled in the leg by a javelin at Donovan Catholic High School, Toms River police said Wednesday. Police and emergency medical services were called to the high school on Hooper Avenue about 5:40 p.m. to help the 16-year-old, who was in an open field near the track-and-field training area, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department. The javelin was impaled several inches into his right thigh, but he was not visibly bleeding, and he was conscious and having a conversation with first responders, Messina said. Toms River Fire Company members had to cut the javelin so the boy could be taken to the hospital to have the rest removed, she said. The boy was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by Toms River EMS unit 4 and RWJ Barnabas paramedics, Messina said. The extent of his injuries was not known, and it was unclear whether he was an athlete participating or a bystander.
