Join the City of Miami Gardens for a Juneteenth Drive-In Celebration!
City of Miami Gardens Vice Mayor Reggie Leon, Councilwoman Katrina Wilson and Councilman Robert Stephens, III present the Juneteenth Drive-In Celebration hosted by Comedian Marvin Dixon!
Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day, celebrates the end of the Civil War and slavery.
It was June 19, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger traveled to Galveston, Texas and announced that the Civil War has ended, and all enslaved people were to be freed. Since then, communities have celebrated June 19 as the official day of Emancipation.
According to the United States Library of Congress, “communities have developed their own traditions. As families emigrated from Texas to other parts of the United States, they carried the Juneteenth celebrations with them.”
Under this year’s theme Forward Together: Traveling the Journey To Freedom Through Music, Miami Gardens has invited special acts to perform multiple musical selections that will highlight the evolution of slavery to freedom in the United States.
There will be merchandise and food trucks, with music provided by DJ BoWeezy.
Please be reminded that this is a “Drive-In” celebration. All residents must remain in or near their cars at all times. While you must stay near your cars, residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
There shall be no more than five (5 ) persons per car and COVID-19 guidelines will be strictly enforced (i.e. masks, six feet separation, etc.)
Gates open at 4PM at Lot E. Show begins at 5PM.
See You There!
