Dr. Tilton, Revolutionary War Hero, and the Tilton Mansion Gardens On June 1, 2021, at 5:30 p.m., the Tilton Society of Delaware will welcome Chad Nelson to lead a Tilton Mansion Garden Tour: Dr. Tilton, Revolutionary War Hero, and his Gardens, the first in a series of lectures about the life and work of Dr. James Tilton (1745 – 1822). The hour-long event commemorating the 266th anniversary of Dr. Tilton's birth takes place on the grounds of his original Wilmington home, The Tilton Mansion, located at 805 North Broom Street in Wilmington, Delaware. After attending the tour, guests are welcome to purchase dinner at the University and Whist Club. The tour is free of charge, however, reservations are required for both the tour and dinner. Dr. Tilton was both a Revolutionary War physician who redefined the care protocols for injured soldiers as well as a horticulturist, credited in both fields throughout his lifetime in scientific journals as an innovative and forward-thinking leader. Chad Nelson is a skilled landscape architect with strong horticultural knowledge and a passion for projects that bring together people and plants. A research historian and interpreter with experience at Monticello and Thomas Jefferson’s public gardens, Mr. Nelson is uniquely qualified to bring the gardens and Dr. Tilton’s work to life. This program is funded in part by a grant from Delaware Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Tilton Society of Delaware is an organization whose purpose is to educate about the life's work of Dr. James Tilton and the historic significance of the Tilton Mansion on Broom Street in Wilmington, Delaware. The Tilton Mansion is a contributing property to the Eighth Street Park Historic District (or Tilton Park Historic District).
