CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Metroparks may soon claim a prestigious honor. The park system is a finalist for the 2021 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation. Since the award's inception, the Metroparks have been received the Gold Medal four times, most recently in 2016. "We are honored to be named as a finalist for the prestigious Gold Medal award alongside such great park systems across the country," said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman. "This recognition is a testament to our team that goes above-and-beyond every day to strengthen our mission of conservation, education and recreation for all." The Metroparks are among four finalists for the Gold Medal. The award is issued by the American Academy for Park and Recreation (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The Cleveland Metroparks includes more than 24,000 acres. Over the past three years the park system has rehabilitated 27 miles of trails, improving connectivity among 49 communities. A 2018 study found the park system generates an annual regional economic impact of $873 million by enhancing property values, reducing stormwater runoff, generating tourism and improving local health.
