Funny how today's Conservative Republicans fail to mention how the Republican Party was hijacked and taken over by the John Birch Society, the White Citizens Council and the Ku Klux Klan in the early 1960's and how the Republican Party implemented the GOP Southern Strategy appealing to poor working class White Southern segregationists and Southern evangelicals. In 1964, GOP presidential candidate Sen. Barry Goldwater ran on a platform of states rights, forced busing, repealing civil rights legislation and pro Segregation. White Southern Dixiecrats were Conservative, not Liberal and the majority of them ended up leaving the Democratic Party and joined up with the Republican Party like Strom Thurmond.
