Vittles and Vibes: Jersey Style Mother's Day Cookout (May 2021) It is often said: "there's no love like that of a mother for her child." We all remember our days in grade school during art class where we traced and cut out heart shapes and flowers from colored construction paper for our school made Mother's Day cards. We would rush home full of excitement to give the card to mom so she could place it on the fridge using the classic fruit shaped magnets. Fond memories like these from my youth is what inspires this month's meal: A celebration of love, compassion and nurture from mothers and women guardians. A New Jersey cookout would not be complete without the sounds of classic disco and house music. Newark dance clubs like the Elaganza, Zanzibar and Club Sensations and Le Jock were the places where our parents and grandparents broke day dancing to these timeless classics. I cannot think of a family event or gathering where some combination of the songs featured in this month's expanded playlist.
