Description
Explore some of the fascinating locations across Coronado that most visitors don't see, as well as a few they do. Following along with Tour Guide Jennifer Hudson, begin your stroll at charming Rotary Park, home to the iconic Coronado Christmas tree. Walk down Orange Avenue to the Coronado Library, where you'll take in works of art most San Diegans don’t even know are there. After passing Spreckels Park, named after sugar magnate John D. Spreckels, view several churches built by prominent San Diego architects before taking a break and enjoying some gelato at a local eatery. Reinvigorated by the cool dessert and the sugar, circle back to Orange Avenue to view the most modern building in Coronado built after the Hotel del. Then find out how Star Park got its name, learn the real-life inspiration for the Emerald City in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and daydream about the mansions that line Ocean Boulevard. Throughout your walk, keep an eye out for "Home of a Naval Aviator" signs and discover Navy flight's importance to the island. Hear the origin of Naval Air Station North Island's name (it was obvious at the time, but now not as much!) and how it became the birthplace of Navy Aviation. Your tour will end at the Hotel del Coronado, where you'll hear a few stories about its construction and history before enjoying some free time to explore on your own. About Jennifer: A native of San Diego, Jennifer is a self-described “history nerd” who has a BA in history from UC Santa Barbara. It isn’t the “facts” that make history interesting, but the stories of the people and the context of events that happened in the past that interest her. In following those interests Jennifer has worked in a variety of fields and positions that all lead back to history and stories – Park Ranger for the National Park Service in Massachusetts, leading tours of Ireland, Alaska and the Western US, and guiding local tours in San Diego since 2002. Jennifer also spent a decade working for a nationally known e-commerce company advocating for customers, but prefers spending her time on a motor coach and sharing stories than in a cubicle. In her spare time Jennifer likes to read, hike (she walked 185 miles of the Camino de Santiago in May 2016), cook, visit museums, attend plays & concerts, spend time with family & friends, and explore San Diego with her dog Bailey.
