NORTHPORT, NY — Residents are due to head to the polls on May 18 to vote on the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District 2021-22 budget. The vote is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents, depending on where they live, will either head to their assigned polling place at the Fifth Avenue, Dickinson Avenue or William J. Brosnan school. The Northport-East Northport School District's proposed spending plan for the 2021-22 school year is $174,704,748. That's a 1.13 percent increase from the current budget. To fund the increase, the district proposes a tax levy of $150,843,867 up 0.75 percent from the current year's. "The proposed budget directly addresses the financial stressors that will be impacting our district this year and into the future, including the LIPA settlement and declining enrollment," David Badanes, president of the board of education, wrote in a letter to parents. "The reorganization of our schools and closing of two buildings helps to mitigate a significant tax burden shift onto our community, yet still maintains our small class sizes and plethora of educational and extracurricular opportunities for students." Bellerose Avenue Elementary and Dickinson Avenue Elementary School, both in East Northport, are scheduled to close on Aug. 31 following a vote by the school board.
