NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Sometimes, it takes a village to save the symbol of a nation. On Thursday evening, Westchester County police received a 911 emergency call about an injured bald eagle on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle. A patrol officer found a number of drivers had already stopped and surrounded the bird which had moments earlier been hit by a car near the NYSDOT Maintenance Yard. With the help of police, a wildlife expert and a few strangers on the busy highway, the bird now nicknamed "Hutch" is on the mend and being cared for at Animal Nation in South Salem. The good samaritan is credited with keeping the bird from further injuring itself or, worse yet, being hit by another car. Police also thanked Jim Horton of Quality Pro Pest & Wildlife Services who is a regular fixture on the scene in cases in which wildlife is injured. A spokesperson for Animal Nation tells Patch that Hutch is on the road to recovery. The eagle received a full medical work up and has since been transferred to a larger facility upstate.
