MINEOLA, NY — Traffic became snarled in downtown Mineola on Monday afternoon as firefighters responded to a fire at Winthrop Care Institutes on Mineola Boulevard, Nassau County police said. The fire broke out just after 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of the six-story medical office building near NYU Langone Hospital Long Island, according to reports from first responders. The fire began inside a closet and was deemed electrical in nature, a police spokesman said. No one was injured. There were heavy traffic delays near Mineola Boulevard and First Street, according to Nassau County Traffic Management. The police department sent several police units to help with traffic control, as well as a police ambulance to the scene, a police spokesman said. A hospital spokeswoman said access to the hospital's emergency room was not affected during the fire response. A Long Island Rail Road spokesman said train service to and from the Mineola train station, which is down the block from the building, was also not impacted by the fire.
