SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — Residents are due to head to the polls on May 18 to vote on the South Huntington School District 2021-22 budget. The board of education will also be voted on. The vote is scheduled at Walt Whitman High School from 3 to 10 p.m. The South Huntington School District's proposed spending plan for the 2021-22 school year is $177,837,763. That's a 1.82 percent increase from the current budget. To fund the increase, the district proposes a tax levy of $121,832,088 up 0.99 percent from the current year's. The district educates nearly 5,700 students and employs roughly 1,100 personnel — including more than 500 teachers. South Huntington's planned budget also includes the purchase of two large propane buses and two minivans, worth a total of $357,000. In 2021-22, $786,000 would be earmarked for buildings and grounds maintenance, while $3,170,000 would go toward capital improvement projects.
