VIRGINIA — The deadline for filing income taxes in Virginia is less than a week away. Residents have until Monday, May 17 to file their taxes. Virginia extended the deadline by a couple weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally, Virginians must file their taxes by May 1. The May 17 date matches the new date set by the Internal Revenue Service to file federal income taxes. The Virginia Department of Taxation is encouraging residents to submit their tax returns electronically. Generally, it takes up to four weeks for Virginia to process an electronically filed return and up to eight weeks to process a paper return. However, due to COVID-19 protocols in place, it will likely take even longer for a paper return to move through the system, the state said. The resident will still need to pay any taxes owed on time to avoid additional penalties and interest. Residents can create an online account, which allows the person to track their returns and possible refunds. Residents also can check the status of their refund by calling 804-367-2486 or using the Where's My Refund application on the department's website.
