ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Animal Control and the Arlington County Department of Human Services are warning the public to be on the lookout for a fox exhibiting the symptoms consistent with rabies in the area of Lacey Woods Park, according to a police release. The fox has already bitten two people. Between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., on Monday, police received complaints about a fox acting aggressively and approaching people and dogs in the area of the 1100 block of N George Mason Drive, the 900 block of N Frederick Street, and on the Custis Trail between N George Mason Drive and N Harrison Street. Officials believe the sightings involved the same fox. The fox, which acted aggressively and exhibited the signs of rabies, potentially came into contact with two pets and bit two individuals unprovoked, causing injury. People who have been bitten or scratched by a rabid animal should seek immediate medical attention. Anyone who comes into contact with the fox is asked to call Arlington County Animal Control promptly at 703-931-9241. Public Health officials urge residents to: Ensure pets are up to date on their rabies and distemper vaccinesKeep dogs on a leash at all times and keep cats insideDo not approach or feed any wild animalsFeed pets insideRemove wildlife attractants, such as unsecured garbage cans, open containers of food and compost, from yards. The public is warned to stay away from a fox or any animal that appears to be sick, lethargic, disoriented, or aggressive, and call Animal Control immediately at 703-931-9241. Do not engage the animal or make loud sounds. Instead, back away from the animal at all times. Animal Control asks residents to not leave pets and children unsupervised outdoors at this time. Animal Welfare League of Arlington euthanized a cat recently that had been captured near the county's border with the City of Falls Church. The cat later tested positive for rabies.
