Juneteenth marks an important moment in American history, June 19, 1865, when the enslaved in Galveston, Texas first learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Thus began the Juneteenth celebration, which has grown to acknowledge the importance of education, achievement, community and freedom. Today, the June 19th celebration of African American freedom and togetherness is considered an official holiday in most states.
