5 Deputies Sent to Hospital After Hazmat Exposure In Pico Rivera

PICO RIVERA, CA — Five Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputies and four residents were transported to a hospital Monday following exposure to a hazardous chemical at a home in Pico Rivera, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Both the fire and sheriff's department were called to the scene of the 8000 block of Kellam Lane shortly before 1 p.m. The fire department described the hazardous chemical as a "known substance" later identified as carbon monoxide. Shortly after 2 p.m., a Hazmat team was preparing to enter the building to confirm the substance, according to the fire department. Those at the scene suffered "from minor complaints," the fire department reported. "There are no evacuations of surrounding homes. Instead, we request residents in the immediate area stay inside and remain clear of the incident."
