BEACHWOOD, OH — Longtime coach and athlete Van Monroe is stepping up to take the helm of Beachwood High School's football program, the school announced in a news release. Monroe's promotion to the lead role was approved by the Beachwood Board of Education on Monday. Although he is new to the position of head coach, Monroe is not new to Beachwood. Before taking over the high school program, he coached the Beachwood Middle School football team and taught in the middle school. He also worked as an assistant football coach at Miami University. But before becoming a teacher and coach, Monroe played the game himself. According to the school, he was a two-year varsity football letter winner at Miami University and was on the 2003 MAC Championship team. In high school, Monroe was a standout player at Euclid High School, where he also played baseball, basketball and track and field. "I am so excited for this opportunity and cannot wait to get started," Monroe said in a statement. The coach said his goal for the school is to implement a K-12 program that helps athletes improve each year. "As students progress onto our middle and high school teams, they will build upon what they have learned and have the opportunity for personal and team growth," Monroe said. "When a program is built from the ground up, it excites the community and brings the district together."
