Description

We will visit monuments to past tragedies to understand how those before us commemorated those deaths. In addition to visiting these monuments of past tragedies, we will discuss the messages conveyed by their choices as well as what we can learn about the absence of monuments. We will visit the Newhall House Monument; the Veteran's Cemetery located inside Forest Home Cemetery; the possible traces of Woodland Effigy Mounds; the grave of Dr. Hoyt Dearholt, one of the leaders of Milwaukee's response to the 1918 Spanish pandemic; and the 30 gravesites purchased by the Hmong Development Group. DIRECTIONS: We will meet outside the Halls of History at Forest Home Cemetery, 2405 W. Forest Home. We recommend that you enter on 26th and Forest Home and follow the sign to the office. The route recommended by Google Maps will lead you to the middle of the cemetery, not the northern end where the Halls of History is located. LOGISTICS: Access to toilets will be available at the beginning and end of the tour. We will walk in light rain and will reschedule if we cancel due to weather. Attendees should have their own cell phone and earbuds. You will be given a phone number to dial so you can hear your walk leader as the tour progresses. This will allow participants to socially distance while still being able to hear the rich and interesting walk content. PARKING: If driving, please park on the paved road around the historic chapel to leave the parking spaces in front of the building for customers. YOUR WALK LEADER Sally Merrell has been a volunteer tour guide at Forest Home Cemetery since 2017 and a Milwaukee resident since 1979. She has enjoyed studying history and visiting cemeteries for as long as she can remember. Based on the leader's discretion in where your walk will take place, leaders have limited attendee numbers to ensure those from different households can socially distance. For tours between 10-25 attendees, the leader will either use an audio system or conference call so participants can socially distance at the recommended minimum 6 ft but still hear. If you feel ill or suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of a COVID-19 infection, please do not enter attend any walks. ___________________________________________ Find more walks, bikes, paddles, and rolls at janeswalkmke.org/calendar or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pg/janeswalkmke/events/ Find out how to lead your OWN at janeswalkmke.org Sign up to receive Jane’s Walk MKE newsletters at http://eepurl.com/giPDKL ___________________________________________ As a program of Milwaukee Turners at Turner Hall, Jane’s Walk MKE is part of a worldwide movement of over 200 cities hosting free, resident-led walking tours inspired by urbanist and writer Jane Jacobs.
