Archdiocese Of Hartford Prepares To Relax Protocols At Masses

CONNECTICUT — The state's largest archdiocese announced Monday that later this month parishioners are obligated to begin attending Mass again, as Connecticut relaxes its coronavirus protocols. Gov. Ned Lamont said many protocols will be lifted on May 19, and as a result, the Archdiocese of Hartford said that participation in in-person Mass will begin on May 22 and 23. Churches that have been livestreaming services during the pandemic will continue to do so as a benefit to the home bound. Priests are instructed to remind parishioners that those who can safely attend services in-person will be expected to do so. Masks/face coverings still will be required inside the church. "However, since the risk of infection, though diminished, still remain, the following individuals may very legitimately decide not yet to attend church: those suffering from serious pre-existing conditions making them more susceptible to COVID-19; those who are ill or homebound or who are caregivers in close contact with someone who is; those who have tested positive for any contagious disease, including COVID-19; and those who are in quarantine due to exposure to any contagion, or who reside with someone who is quarantined," the archdiocese wrote in its announcement. Other directives include: Exposed holy water fonts should remain empty for the time beingHymnals and missalettes can be returned to pews, but disposable worship aids can be used insteadPew directional barriers and tape can be removedDoors and windows should be kept open for improved ventilation when possibleAdditionally, the use of choirs and musicians can begin again, but masks must remain on during singing.
