TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River Township Council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on its proposed ordinance to ban retail cannabis within the township on Tuesday.
The township council is set to meet at 6 p.m. in the L. Manuel Hirschblond Meeting Room at Toms River's Town Hall.
The council introduced the ordinance at its April 27 council meeting. It would ban retail sales, manufacturing and distribution businesses for adult recreational cannabis consumption in Toms River, in response to a state law that gives municipalities until August to take action.
Towns that do not enact a ban by August will be barred from enacting a ban for five years.
Toms River council officials said enacting a ban gives them time to consider the issue more fully. The town can rescind the ban if it chooses, officials said.
