Nigel will walk-through interpreting for diabetes patients. Description This workshop will focus on three aspects of the interpreted encounter: preparing for the encounter, medical terminology in ASL, and conveying information with cultural competence. Using common patient scenarios, Nigel will walk-through interpreting for diabetes patients and discuss how to facilitate communication in a way that promotes Deaf/visual concepts. This training is presented in ASL Course Objectives Participants will be able to do the following: - Identify 2 key questions to ask while preparing for this type of appointment - Describe, in ASL, the interaction between injected insulin and blood sugar levels Date, Time, and Location Wednesday, May 26, 2021, 7:00 – 9:00 pm EST Location: ZOOM Course Tuition The cost of this course is $35.00 (US). Cancellation Policy Cancellations will be permitted four or more weeks prior to the start of a training course without incurring a fee. Due to the cost of establishing, holding, and refilling participant slots, along with the associated costs of language assessments and course materials, the following cancellation fee schedule applies: • For 2 to 4 weeks prior to the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 25% of the training course price will be assessed. • Between 8-13 days prior to the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 50% of the training course price will be assessed. • Within 7 days of the start of a training course, a cancellation fee of 75% of the training course price will be assessed. • No show on the first day of the training course will incur a cancellation fee of 100% of training course price. Instructor Nigel Howard Nigel Howard is adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Linguistics. He does the same at the University of Victoria. At Douglas College, he works in the Program of Sign Language Interpretation (INTR), and Child, Family and Community Studies (CFCS). Nigel has been an interpreter for around 25 years in various setting such as medical, mental health, legal, theatre, community and conference/workshop settings locally, nationally and internationally. He is an Accredited International Sign Interpreter by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI). He is part of the United Nations team of International Sign interpreters and does interpret on media. Nigel provides workshops, trainings and presentations for both Deaf and interpreter communities around the world ranging, for example, from Interpreting in Medical Settings to Deaf Interpreter training to Deafhood: Global Diversity in Deaf Culture, and Enculturation & Acculturation: Deaf and Hearing Worlds/Spaces. Additionally, he provides a range of workshops and presentations for hearing people such as medical professionals, parents of Deaf children, education system and social services. One cool thing is the commute by the seaplane between Vancouver and Victoria for work.
