Coroner IDs Pleasanton Man Killed In Car Crash While Walking Dog

PLEASANTON, CA — A Pleasanton man walking his dog in his neighborhood early Monday morning was fatally struck by a car, police said. Mark Fiala, 66, died at the scene, according to police and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Bureau. He was walking in the crosswalk when he was struck. Police said the dog appeared to have minor injuries but they expect it to survive. Police went to the intersection of Stoneridge Drive and Newtown Way around 6 a.m. Monday after the man, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene, the Pleasanton Police Department said in a statement. The dead man had been walking his dog northbound along Newtown when he attempted to cross at Stoneridge and was struck by a car headed eastbound, police said. The Pleasanton Police Department's traffic unit continues to investigate the crash. The car's driver, who was not identified, has not been arrested. The driver and witnesses remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Police said investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role but there is no reason to suspect the driver was been intoxicated. The road was closed for at least three hours in both directions between Newtown and Trevor Parkway while police investigated.
