ISLA VISTA, CA — Two California students were rescued off the Santa Barbara coast after their homemade vessel drifted too far from the shore, officials said.
The two men in their early 20s embarked on their adventure hours before dawn on Saturday in a makeshift boat that bound Home Depot buckets and two kiddie pools together with duct tape, officials from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said.
The college students were rescued at 2:37 a.m. after they were unable to return to shore. The two men, who were not identified, were unharmed.
A spokesperson for the fire department said alcohol was not a factor. The official also posted a photo of the vessel on Twitter and called the incident "nautical nonsense."
