Berkeley Expands Mattress Recycling Program

BERKELEY, CA — Berkeley has launched a pilot mattress recycling program, city officials said in a statement Monday. Curbside pickup of unwanted mattresses will be available through a program funded by the Mattress Recycling Council. The curbside pickup program gives residents three ways to ditch their old mattresses. Residents can bring their old mattresses to retailers who are required under state law to accept old mattresses when purchasing new ones. They can also drop their mattresses off at the Berkeley Transfer Station. Berkeley mattress collection and recycling programs accept standard sized mattresses from twin through California king (including memory foam mattresses), box springs, and futon mattresses that separate from the frame. The city does not accept: Excessively wet, moldy, or soiled mattresses Severely twisted, punctured, or crushed mattresses Mattresses infested with bed bugs Infant or child sized mattresses Air mattresses Mattress toppers Futon bases and frames For pickup instructions visit here.
