Tempe Seeking Public's Help Alleviating Traffic Congestion

TEMPE, AZ — The city of Tempe is seeking the public's help in mapping out its transportation network, creating "a 20-minute city" in the process. The city's Transportation Demand Management and Transportation Management Association plans on doing just that, starting with a pair of virtual meetings later this month on the subject. The two meetings, which are being held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on May 22 and from noon-1 p.m. on May 26, aim to get the public's feedback to a slate of transportation projects. The program aims at improving Tempe's air quality and public health, in addition to reducing congestion, automobile use and costs associated with the city's transportation systems, the city said. The program hopes to provide the information, assistance and incentives needed to motivate Tempe residents to use other forms of transportation besides cars, in addition to helping create alternative work plans, such as telecommuting and staggered shifts for employees to cut down on commuting times. The end goal of the city's plans is to reduce travel times along major streets and reduce Tempe's greenhouse gas emissions, the city said.
