Description
A soft, private opening for The Black Archive Project: Chicago Uprisings 2020 We welcome the close friends and family of the team that put together the videos for The Black Archive Project to come and experience half of the full series, which will be on display at Blanc Gallery from May 14 - May 30. The Black Archive Project is a Black-woman lead initiative to archive the events of the summer of 2020; to make sure that whiteness doesn’t erase them from the historical record. The docu-series features first-hand accounts of the protests and events that followed the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. This film series is not meant to give an all-encompassing account of last summer–we know that thousands of people experienced and contributed to these events in very different ways. Instead, we hope to shine a light on a handful of unique perspectives in an effort to build the beginnings of a Black archive of 2020. The films were conceptualized and directed by Resita Cox, and this show marks the launch of the project and its endeavor to collect the stories and testimonies of black folk involved in the protests last year. The rest of the team behind the films are: Cai Thomas - Director of Photography Miela Fetaw - Producer Todd St. Hill - Associate Producer Davon Clark - Production Assistant Taylor Mason - Wellness Producer / BTS Photos Eric D. Seals - Lighting/Grip About the artist: Resita is a North Carolina-born, Chicago-based independent filmmaker and artist. Resita launched her career in journalism at WTVD-TV in Raleigh, NC and WCTI-TV in New Bern, NC as a multimedia journalist and news reporter. Resita transitioned from news media to documentary film in 2018, where she was named a Chicago Filmmakers Digital Media Production Grantee for her film, Regrowth, which is about food and environmental justice on the West Side of Chicago. Resita has also worked with Kartemquin Films, one of the leading documentary film houses in the Midwest, as the Impact Producer on their Emmy-nominated docu-series produced with The Marshall Project, We Are Witnesses. She is the director of Freedom Hill, a documentary about the environmental racism that is washing away the first town chartered by Black people in the nation Covid-19: Please obseve other people's safety and come to the space with masks. There is a courtyard at Blanc and people will not be asked to wear face coverings in the courtyard, but whenever in the building (unless drinking or eating) we ask that you observe good practice and wear your face coverings. We also ask that you try, as best as possible, to practice social distancing.
