DENVER — A Denver police officer who was shot while on duty Saturday night is recovering at the hospital. The officer, who Denver Police Division Chief Ron Thomas, said is a 5-year veteran of the department, was shot while responding to a situation in the 4200 block of Alcott Street in the Sunnyside neighborhood. His name was not released as of early Sunday afternoon. The wounded officer underwent successful surgery at the Denver Health Medical Center earlier on Sunday, as the police department confirmed he was in stable condition post-surgery. Initially, he had been in critical condition while sustaining wounds to his "lower extremities," Thomas said. Denver police on Twitter said the police officer was shot in the leg. Thomas said "a number of individuals" have been detained, as other police agencies have begun to help Denver police find the shooter. Charges had not been filed against anyone in particular as of Sunday afternoon.
