DePaul WSB Sweeps UIC, Heads to BIG EAST Tournament

Description
A bit of schedule shifting due to COVID issues at Western Illinois University had DePaul hosting UIC for a three game series this weekend. Wearing pink to raise awareness to breast cancer, DePaul started the weekend in exciting fashion, as the Blue Demons took a walkoff extra innings win. UIC put one run on the scoreboard in the first. DePaul came right back with one in their half of the inning. Angela Scalzitti singled, Kate Polucha sacrificed her to second, Jessica Cothern singled and Brooke Johnson reached on an error to load the bases. Skylor Hilger singled for the RBI. In the third, UIC plated one to take the lead again. DePaul matched UIC again in the bottom of the inning. Brooke Johnson singled and scored on a Tori Meyer triple. UIC scored one in the top of the tenth to retake the lead. DePaul came back yet again, but it took a bit of work. With two outs, Polucha was hit by a pitch and Cothern doubled. Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Meyer singled to score Polucha and tie the game. Pinch runner Zoe Rettig tried to win the game, but was thrown out at home. Pearl Barroso singled to start the 11th inning. Maranda Gutierrez was hit by a pitch., while Nicole Sullivan was sent in to pinch run for Barroso. Garce Frazier singled to score Sullivan and win the game. Natalie Halvorson pitched nine and a third innings, allowing just two earned runs and six hits before Krista Dalgarn relieved her. Dalgarn picked up the win to improve to 12-2 on the season. Fresh off her win yesterday, Dalgarn pitched a complete game and improved to 13-2. Dalgarn scattered nine hits, while striking out two and allowing no walks. Once again, UIC scored first, plating one in the first inning. Once again DePaul came back, but it took until the fifth inning to do so. Barroso walked to lead off the inning. After Erin Hokcer pinch ran for Barrosso, Frazier sacrifice bunted her to second. Scalzitti followed with a liner off the pitcher's glove that sailed into center field, to score Hocker. After Polucha walked, Cothern crushed one to center to make it 4-1 DePaul, which is how the game ended. DePaul took the night cap 4-0. In the first inning, Scalzitti singled and Polucha doubled to drive in the run. Polucha then scored on a single by Cothern to make it 2-0. In the fourth, Barroso homered. Frazier reached base and scored on a Polucha single to make it 4-0. Julyana Gomez started and went the distance for DePaul and picked up the win to go to 3-1. She gave up four hits, while striking out two and allowing no walks. The three game sweep brought DePaul to 26-9 on the season. DePaul is the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Blue Demons will face Butler on May 13 at 11 a.m. CT.
