THE YMCA AT VIRGINIA TECH
Recognizing the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to history, culture, and achievements of this nation.
May was chosen in recognition of the immigration of the first Japanese person to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the official completion of the transcontinental railroad—constructed in large part by Chinese immigrants—on May 10, 1869. Today, it is a month that recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of this nation.
The YMCA at Virginia Tech is aware that anti-Asian hate incidents are prominent on the national level, but the NRV is not immune to their effects. We, by denouncing acts of hate and racism against them, can make a difference and promote positive change by raising awareness and supporting the Asian members of our community.
We are celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Heritage month during May by bringing to you many activities and events. This work is the result of the collaboration of the YMCA at Virginia Tech and the local Asian community.
