Congers Crash: Victim Dies, Driver Faces Homicide, More Charges

NEW CITY — One teen has died and another has been jailed after a 3-car crash at 10:50 p.m. Thursday on Congers Road, Clarkstown police said. A 16-year-old boy died of his injuries Friday afternoon, police said. A 17-year-old girl remains in serious condition. Both were passengers in a black Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Alan Mendoza, police said. Mendoza, 18, faces seven felony charges and one misdemeanor charge: one count of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide (felony), one count of Aggravated Vehicular Assault (felony), one count of Manslaughter in the 2nd (felony), two counts of Assault 2nd (felony), Vehicular manslaughter in the 2nd (felony), Driving While Intoxicated (felony) and Reckless Driving. Mendoza was arraigned by the Honorable Judge Ugell and has been transported to the Rockland County Jail where he will await a future court date. The victim was a student at Clarkstown High School North, and district officials have issued a statement saying that grief counselors will be available for students and staff, News12 reported. It's the second fatal crash involving teenagers in Rockland County in the past two weeks. A Suffern High School sophomore was killed in a crash on Route 202 in Montebello April 24 and another teen was charged with vehicular manslaughter. The crash occurred in the Prides Crossing area, police said. Also responding to the late-night crash were members of the New City Fire Department, New City Ambulance and Rockland Paramedics. Congers Road was closed for several hours while the accident scene was investigated and then cleaned up.
