It also relies on knowledge learned from geology, hydrology, geophysics, and other related sciences. Surveying The surveying department provides engineering services involving surveying and leveling land by utilizing various instruments to map and shape the terrain. The primary aim of surveying is to locate and measure property lines, lay out buildings, bridges, channels, highways, and pipelines for construction.  Geostatic surveying and plane surveying are the two most popular types of surveying. Surveyors have to operate with various geometry, trigonometry, regression analysis, physics, engineering, metrology, programming languages, and the law.  Moreover, they also have to use total stations, radios, total robotic stations, theodolites, digital levels, GNSS receivers, retroreflectors, 3D scanners, inclinometer, handheld tablets, optical and subsurface locators, drones, GIS, and surveying software.
