Town Hires NYPD Veteran As Code Enforcement Director

EAST HAMPTON, NY — East Hampton Town has hired a New York City Police Department veteran to helm its code enforcement division. The East Hampton town board voted unanimously on May 4 to appoint Kevin Cooper, who has 32 years of experience with the NYPD and the New York City transit police, as the new director of code enforcement. Cooper will start immediately and will serve as head of the ordinance enforcement department, at an annual salary of $90,000; he will replace Don Kauth, who is retiring this month, town officials said. Cooper retired from the NYPD last May with the ranks of sergeant and sergeant specialassignment; he supervised investigations related to subway crimes and served with the Internal Affairs Bureau, the town said. "The director of code enforcement holds a key position in enforcing our community codes andupholding our residents' quality of life, and I am pleased to welcome Mr. Cooper in this role,"Van Scoyoc said. "Our businesses are looking forward to a busy summer in order to begin to recover economically from the pandemic. With his qualifications and experience, I am confident Mr. Cooper will provide the leadership required to maintain the balance needed for everyone to have a safe and successful summer." Cooper added: "I'm looking forward to being a great representative and ambassador for the town, the town board, and the citizens of East Hampton."
