Rabid Cat Found Near Falls Church Euthanized In Arlington County

ARLINGTON, VA — Animal Welfare League of Arlington and the Arlington County Department of Human Services are warning members of the public if they have been bitten or scratched by an animal recently to reach out for help, according to an AWLA blog post. This warning came after AWLA euthanized a rabid cat that was found earlier this week along the county's border with the City of Falls Church. The animal was described as a medium sized, domestic, long-hair cat with gray and white on its chest and face Falls Church Police received complaints from the public on Sunday and Monday about a stray cat that was spotted in the 100 block of Gresham Place and later in the 100 block of W Jefferson Street, according to the post. On Monday, a resident confined the cat and contacted Falls Church Police, who took the animal to AWLA. During the process of confining the cat, the resident sustained minor injuries. AWLA euthanized the cat after observing neurological symptoms. The animal later tested positive for rabies. If any resident, their family members, or pets have been bitten, scratched, or come into contact with this cat, health officials urge them to call AWLA at 703-931-9241 immediately. AWLA also encouraged residents to do the following: Ensure pets are up to date on their rabies and distemper vaccinesKeep dogs on a leash at all times and keep cats insideDo not approach or feed any wild animalsFeed pets insideRemove wildlife attractants from yards, such as unsecured garbage cans, open containers of food and compost.Residents should remain vigilant and report any animal that seems sick, lethargic, disoriented, or aggressive by calling Arlington County Animal Control at 703-931-9241.
