JERSEY CITY, NJ —Jersey City officials honored Shirley Rogers-Fields at the last City Council meeting and named her Senior of the Year. Rogers-Fields was the first African-American person to serve as a clerk transcriber in Hudson County. She worked for Hudson County for 27 and a half years, retiring in 1995 as an office supervisor. The council unanimously voted to pass a resolution, honoring Rogers-Fields. The resolution was introduced by Council President Joyce Watterman. "Shirley's outstanding leadership and tireless efforts continues to address and raise awareness on issues that impact seniors in her community. Her exuberant personality can bring forth an abundance of seniors to any given community meeting or workshop," the resolution reads, "Ms. Fields is responsible for increasing the number of seniors at various community and civic meetings to increase their awareness of how their city is evolving, growing and being led. Her melodious voice is aiding seniors in the quest to enhance their overall quality of their lifestyle." During the meeting, councilors praised Rogers-Fields for her work in the county and over the years in the city. "You do Ward F proud, thank you," said Ward F councilman Jermaine Robinson.
