RI Unemployment Benefits To Resume Job Search Requirement

PROVIDENCE, RI — Some changes are coming to Rhode Island's unemployment benefits in the coming weeks. Starting May 23, the Department of Labor and Training will reinstate the requirement that anyone collecting benefits actively search for work. The requirement was relaxed at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, as thousands of Rhode Islanders were laid off. As vaccination rates climb and more businesses look to hire employees, Gov. Dan McKee said it's safe to bring back the policy. Many Rhode Island businesses have voiced concerns about finding people to fill open jobs, particularly in the service industry. Some say this is due to the additional $300 per week provided on top of unemployment benefits by the American Rescue Plan. Unlike some other states, like Montana, McKee said he has no plans to take away the unemployment bonus. Instead, he is working with the General Assembly to pass a law allowing more flexibility with unemployment benefits, even to keep the extra $300 in certain circumstances.
