Garden & tree pro hiring first employees - lots of perks

Portland OR

Description

The pitch: I'm hiring a small, steady crew to work with me in landscape contracting. I run an innovative company that pays a living wage, is well-grounded, and provides actual training and professional development opportunities. The candidates: Looking for ppl who are creative and have worked (or volunteered) in landscaping, farming, trail building, demolition, DIY, arts, theater, carpentry, habitat restoration, and related work. Must have reliable transportation... bike and bus are ok if you can honestly make it work - most our job sites are on the east side, but we also do big jobs on the west side. The work: We build school veggie gardens, flower gardens, rain gardens, transform yards, and more. We take breaks, hydrate, and work in the shade when possible. We pull weeds, dig holes, use mechanical advantage, plant flowers, move heavy stuff like lumber and tree limbs, unload soil and mulch from the company truck and move it around in a 2-wheeled farm cart (like a wheelbarrow, but without the tipping risk). We emphasize safety, ergonomics, and efficiency. The leadership: I have more work than I can accomplish alone. I enjoy my work VERY much, I have an open mind, and I work side-by-side with crew members, as colleagues. I'm COVID vaccinated, and still wear a mask, in solidarity with other people who haven't been able to access the vaccine yet. It's my hope to assemble a crew that believes in science, cares about the health of our town, and trusts public health officials. My hobbies include work, family, and improv comedy. My interests include Bonsai trees, art, old music, and Weird Al Yankovic. About the company: Established in 2018. We usually start between 8am-10am, and finish between 3pm-6pm. Overtime eligibility starts at the 8 hour mark of any work day - which exceeds Oregon standards on overtime that only require OT after 40 hours. We want to operate as a B-Corp "For Benefit Corporation" within a few years. We already strive to balance purpose and profit. We're proud that we consider the impact of our decisions on workers, clients, colleagues, suppliers, our state, and the environment. We just need to file a bunch of paperwork, but hiring YOU is more important right now. Company culture: We value permaculture methods but can't always use them, we value creativity, and if you know how to get something done better than the rest of us - we'll ask you to teach us your method. We practice a "growth mindset". We collaborate. We reward initiative and innovation. We run this company like we care about workers and people. We are building an alternative to "fat cat" landscaping companies. If any of this made you say "hell yeah" - you might be an intrinsically motivated match for this amazing adventure. Email me a paragraph about why you want to join the crew. Qualified folks will be contacted for references. Thanks!
