Description
Join Safer Futures at our1st Annual "Shine a Light on Domestic Violence" Community Walk to raise awareness that "it happens here, too." Please join Safer Futures for our 1st Annual "Shine a Light on Domestic Violence" Community Awareness Walk. This socially-distanced benefit walk aims to “shine a light” on domestic violence within our own very community and raise awareness that "it happens here, too." So often, domestic violence is seen as an "other" problem. Domestic violence is seen as something only "those" people experience. But in reality, domestic violence is all around us, even right here within in our community. At Safer Futures, the only domestic violence shelter and resource center in Portage County, we see how pervasive domestic violence is within our very own community every single day. For survivors in Portage County, Safer Futures is here to provide support, safety and security during the healing process. On a national level, 24 people are abused by an intimate partner every single minute. Right here in Ohio, 109 Ohioans lost their lives from domestic violence in fiscal year 2020. Think these numbers are unacceptable? So do we. Together, we will walk to "shine a light" on the reality that domestic violence happens right here - it impacts our families, our friends, our neighbors, our community - "it happens here, too." Shine a Light on Domestic Violence will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2021. The event will be held at the beautiful Sunny Lake Park located in Aurora, OH and begins at 6 pm. Our evening will include a 2.4 mile walk to honor the 24 people abused by an intimate partner every single minute. The event will conclude with a candle light vigil to honor the 109 Ohioans who lost their lives to domestic violence in fiscal year 2020. The 1st Annual Shine a Light on Domestic Violence will bring our communities together to recognize that "it happens here, too" - but it doesn't have to. Together, we can stand up to domestic violence. Together, we can work towards a violence-free Portage County. **Please note: All covid-19 precautions will be in place for this in-person event, including social distancing, mask wearing, sanitizing, etc. For up-to-date event details, be sure to follow our social media pages (Facebook: Safer Futures; and Instagram: @saferfutures).
