Description

Join Peggy Cornett, Curator of Plants at Monticello, as she talk about Thomas Jefferson, the Scientist and Gardener. Thomas Jefferson had a vision for his home and plantation that was as revolutionary as his political ideas. He labored on the house and Monticello’s surrounding landscapes for more than forty years. He believed that “the greatest service [that] can be rendered any country is to add a useful plant to its culture.” To this end he endeavored to improve the lives of his fellow Americans and promote agrarianism. In retirement he famously said, “I have often thought that if heaven had given me choice of my position and calling, it would have been on a rich spot of earth, well-watered, and near a good market for the productions of the garden.… such a variety of subjects… always coming to perfection… and instead of one harvest, a continued one throughout the year.” By preserving, propagating, and maintaining a wide selection of heirloom vegetables, fruits, and herbs in the Monticello gardens today, we strive to promote their importance for the gardens and farms of the future. About Peggy Cornett: Peggy Cornett is the Curator of Plants at Monticello. Cornett received the SGHS Flora Ann Bynum Medal for exemplary service in the garden history field and the Garden Club of America’s Zone VII Horticultural Commendation for horticultural expertise, generosity in sharing knowledge and dedication to preserving Jefferson’s botanical legacy.
