Description
Join us for a comprehensive analysis of Buddhism and Western Philosophy coupled with meditation in 5 sessions. Course Description: To share knowledge about the western tradition of thinking, its strengths and weaknesses, as the western tradition of philosophy relates to the Theravada school of Buddhism. This proposal welcomes participation in a monastic-led meditation at the beginning of each session. After meditation, the instructor will share knowledge regarding a particular aspect of spiritual life where philosophy and Buddhism intersect. After sharing, the participants will be encouraged to discuss, question, or otherwise add their own thoughts and feelings about the topic. About the Instructor: Gus Santo was a Benedictine monk at St. John’s Abbey in Minnesota for six years, where he studied theology and the history of philosophy, and also was an instructor in philosophy at St. John’s University as a member of the faculty. When Gus left the monastery in 1981 and moved to Chicago to get a “real” job and a “real” life, he continued his intense study of philosophy on his own and has done so for the past forty years. Gus taught a variety of adult education classes in the western tradition at the Lake Country Unitarian Universalist Church in Hartland, Wisconsin, from 2007 through 2020. The Particulars: Five ninety-minute sessions on Thursday evenings from 6:30 pm. to 8:00 pm. will cost $50.00 per participant. Due to restrictions related to the pandemic, this seminar will be limited to ten participants only. The instructor is volunteering his time and expertise; consequently, the fees are going directly to the Blue Lotus Temple. Access to an email address for each participant is a requirement, as any schedule changes or required reading assignments will be sent to each participant electronically. The Schedule: Seminars will be held on Thursday evenings in June 2021 on the 3rd. 10th. 17th and 24th, and on July 1st of 2021. The last day to register is May 31st!
