Staley Da Bear, the official mascot of the Chicago Bears, made a surprise visit to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital’s nurses on the orthopedic unit yesterday. Staley delivered Dunkin’ coffee and donuts to kick off National Nurses Week starting today. National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Nurses Week honors nurses worldwide for the work they do and the care they provide not only to patients, but each other and all team members. This week offers an opportunity to thank nurses for their contributions, especially for their tireless efforts over the past year of the pandemic. “This small gesture of gratitude from the Bears to our unit’s nurses was an incredible way to kick off National Nurses Week,” says Sheryl-Lyn Quijano, assistant clinical manager of the orthopedic unit. “The past year has taken an emotional and physical toll on all team members in health care and this surprise visit was just what we needed to show our nurses how much they are appreciated.” A group of 20 nurses were gathered on the unit, unaware of the surprise that was coming down the hallway. “Every year during National Nurses Week, our leaders go above and beyond to celebrate us,” says Susan Hack, nurse on the orthopedic unit. “With COVID-19, we are limited to smaller in-person gatherings and virtual events, but no gesture is too small. Seeing Staley Da Bear walking to the nurses station with donuts and coffee was certainly a wonderful surprise for our team and we thank him and the Bears for making this happen.”
