Washington Conservation Corps is now recruiting quarter-term AmeriCorps members on our field crews located statewide. During these unprecedented times, our priority remains the safety of our AmeriCorps members and Crew Supervisors. We have adapted our field safety measures to protect the health of our AmeriCorps members and the communities in which they serve. Through these safety measures, members will still get the opportunity to serve outdoors building backcountry and urban trails, planting native trees and shrubs along rivers and streams, removing invasive species, and more! Safety measures for field activities will include continued physical distancing, wearing a mask as needed, washing hands with soap regularly, and meeting respiratory protection requirements for travel in a crew truck*. *this may include N-95, KN-95 and/or P-100 respirators, all of which require removal of facial hair for adequate fit Positions in your area: • CREW-TACOMA/CITY OF TACOMA: Join one of two Urban Forestry crews located in the City of Destiny! The City of Tacoma crews serve on a wide range of urban environmental restoration projects within the city limits and are based at the City of Tacoma’s Urban Forestry Nursery. Our schedule is Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This is a dynamic crew that provides limitless opportunities for on-site training, varied skill development, and a diversity of projects. We focus on native plant installation, nursery management, restoration site maintenance, and Integrated Pest Management to control invasive weeds. Additionally, this crew completes a myriad of other projects throughout the year including native plant propagation (seed starting and hardwood cuttings), steep slope stabilization, Street Tree pruning and care, site surveying, and light rigging applications as needed for hazard tree removal. • CREW-TACOMA/PIERCE COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION: This crew serves Pierce County Parks and Recreation based out of Tacoma on habitat restoration and trail projects. Projects will range from trail construction and maintenance, fencing, habitat restoration, planting native species, spraying herbicide, as well as removing and controlling invasive species. Crew schedule is Monday-Thursday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Members will gain experience and competency in maintenance techniques while utilizing an array of hand tools, rigging equipment, herbicide application equipment, and power equipment including chainsaws, brush cutters, augers, and mechanized wheelbarrows. • CREW-SNOQUALMIE/SNOQUALMIE INDIAN TRIBE: This crew meets in Snoqualmie off I-90 and supports riparian restoration project site prep and planting. Field tasks and activities will include noxious weed control of target noxious weed species, plant staging and layout, installing a variety of native tree, shrub and groundcover species. Project maintenance at all sites will include mowing, weed control, browse control (installation of plant protectors and/or temporary exclusion fencing), mulching and watering (as needed). Requirements: Must be 18-25 years old, with exceptions for those with military service or with mental or sensory disabilities. Strong preference is given to Washington state residents. Benefits: Members earn a semi-monthly living allowance of $1,100 and receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,638.89 (scholarship) upon successful completion of 3-month contract (and 450 hours). Educational loan forbearance is available. Basic healthcare offered by WCC.
