CONCORD, NH — A former Concord police detective has been arrested and held without bail after being accused of violating conditions of his bail and contempt of court. Brian Croft was arrested Wednesday by the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office after two incidents during the day where officials accused him of knowingly violating bail conditions by being near and contacting the victim in the case. He faces multiple charges including stalking and contempt of court, according to Kate Giaquinto, the director of communications for the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. Croft was arrested in January, three weeks after being placed on leave, on second-degree assault, two counts of witness tampering, and two counts of falsifying physical evidence, all felonies, as well as a single domestic violence charge, while being accused of assaulting a woman. Croft was released on bail days after his arrest, promising court officials he would abide by the conditions of his bail. Prosecutors, however, said there was "clear and convincing evidence" that Croft was a danger to himself and the public. He was also given an ankle bracelet for electronic monitoring. Croft was also required to refrain from drinking or taking drugs and had a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew at a home in Boscawen. The state put out a 12-hour domestic violence warrant for his arrest accusing him of twice violating conditions of his bail on Wednesday — once, by contacting the victim, and a second time, coming within 1,000 of where she might be, on Knowlton Road in Boscawen, according to the attorney general's office. "Mr. Croft is being held on preventative detention pending arraignment," Giaquinto said. "It is anticipated that Mr. Croft will be arraigned in Hillsborough County Superior Court and the Concord Circuit Court on a future date." No other information was available about the allegations. The original charges against Croft came to fruition after a Concord lieutenant and a state police lieutenant received a tip from the Department of Children, Youth, and Families accusing Croft of assaulting a woman on Oct. 17, 2020. Concord Police Chief Bradley Osgood requested New Hampshire State Police investigate the allegation, since the department does not handle criminal investigations of its own officers, and later, an investigator with the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, began looking into the case, too. After a multi-month investigation, including initial denials by the victim, Croft was accused of choking the victim while holding their child and closing a door on her arm. He was also accused of falsifying evidence and tampering with witnesses.
