TROY, MI — No injuries were reported Thursday when a fire broke out inside a Troy home, something fire officials said could be credited to having working smoke alarms. Nine people were inside a home at 2849 Lovington around 5:32 a.m. Thursday when the fire was reported. Authorities said the family was sleeping when they were woken by their smoke alarm, which gave them enough time to safely evacuate the home. "This incident shows the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home," Troy Fire Department Lt. Dan Mahrle said. "This could have been a very different outcome if the smoke alarms were not installed." Some of the children inside the home had to evacuate through a window, officials said. The family called 911 once everyone was out of the home. Fire crews from Stations 1 and 4 were called to the scene. When they arrived at the scene they found a fire in an attached garage of a small, single-story home. Crews quickly knocked down the fire, containing most of the damage to the garage area. The incident is an example of the importance of smoke alarms, with officials recommending an alarm in each bedroom, outside of each sleeping area and at least one on every level of the home. "It is also important to have, and practice, an escape plan with everyone who lives in your home, knowing two ways out of each room," Mahrle said.
