Description

GEORGIA — President Joe Biden on Wednesday evening approved a disaster declaration in Georgia for areas hard-hit by tornados in March. An EF4 tornado with wind gusts up to 170 mph slammed into Newnan late on March 25, killing one person, injuring others and severely damaging homes and businesses in and around the city's downtown. The disaster declaration releases millions of dollars in federal disaster relief dollars for state and local governments, as well as certain nonprofit organizations to repair or replace damaged facilities and equipment in Coweta County — where Newnan is the county seat — and in Fannin, Gilmer, Heard, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun and White counties. The monies will be available on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work as well as some statewide hazard prevention measures, the White House said, and will be administered by FEMA.
