Public Art of Chelsea, Mass - Yesterday's Stories, Today's Voices, Tomorrow's Visions Public art, at its best, is a book collectively written a community. It preserves important memories of the past, provides a means for reflection, and captures an ever unfolding narrative of a place and its people. Across the country community's are seeing their monuments and public art with fresh eyes. In this tour we'll walk through Chelsea's downtown and learn about the monuments and public art installed throughout the district. We'll see art across nearly two centuries, each with its own goal: nineteenth century honoring those lost in the American Civil War, totems by immigrant communities to make tangible their presence, intimate sculptures to build connections , contemporary muralists finding their voices in the public sphere. The tour explores the changing nature of public art in an ever evolving urban landscape. Masks are required. Meet on the lawn on the Broadway side of City Hall. This tour was researched and developed by Mimi Graney for the City of Chelsea.  Mimi is the Civic Design and Engagement Strategist for the City of Chelsea. Her work focuses on using shared public space as a means of building a stronger, more connected community. Chelsea Prospers facilitates events, public art and human-centered infrastructure projects in the City of Chelsea, with the goal of weaving community connections and healthier, happier and more prosperous City.
