Freedom Summer 2021 commemorates civil rights leaders, activists and allies of the Freedom Summer Project of 1964. The South Carolina Summer Project, also known as “Freedom Summer 2021”, commemorates civil rights leaders, activists and allies of the Freedom Summer Project of 1964. The historic voter registration drive was aimed at increasing the number of registered Black voters in Mississippi where over 700 mostly white volunteers joined African Americans to fight against voter intimidation and discrimination at the polls. This June, the Southern Women Philanthropy Conference will launch its rural voter registration initiative for mobilizing African American voters across the 46 counties in South Carolina.
