MIAMI-DADE — Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution Tuesday creating a 13-member task force of cryptocurrency and finance industry experts, according to a news release from County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, who sponsored the bill.
The Cryptocurrency Task Force will explore the feasibility of allowing Miami-Dade County to accept cryptocurrencies as a form of payment for county taxes, fees and services, and other recommendations that may be advantageous to Miami-Dade County. The task force will explore the benefits to residents and employees of the county.
Given the rise of U.S. retailers - such as AT&T, Microsoft, Overstock and Home Depot - realizing the cost saving benefits and convenience of accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, the acceptance of cryptocurrency by Miami-Dade has the potential to attract highly skilled talent and high-paying jobs to the county. Higgins said.
"South Miami-Dade is the ideal location, and we open for innovation. We have a chance to lead as the crypto county and explore policy in this emerging industry. This is an important opportunity for the future of South Dade where most of our county's growth will occur in the next decade," she said. "By revolutionizing how we do trade, cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies have the potential to attract and retain highly skilled talent, create jobs, and grow our local economy. The future is here whether we are ready. My plan is to ensure that we are ready."
The 13-member task force will provide a final report on its findings on the feasibility, potential costs and recommendations to commissioners within 180 days.
