Islip Terrace Hero Honored In Street Renaming Ceremony

ISLIP TERRACE, NY — An Islip Terrace hero was honored during a street naming ceremony held last weekend. Sgt. Lawrence Guarnieri was a member of the New York, the New Jersey Port Authority Police Department, a volunteer firefighter, and an Islip Terrace Fire Department Captain. He died in 2014 of a 9/11-related illness. "Sgt. Guarnieri demonstrated courage and commitment to his community and to his fellow citizens," Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. "He put himself in harm's way, as a member of the New York, New Jersey Port Authority Police Department, and as a member and Captain of the Islip Terrace Fire Department." To dedicate the first responder, Town of Islip officials renamed East Farmingdale Street "Sgt. Lawrence A. Guarnieri Way." The block is where he raised his family, and where his children still live today. Guarnieri's children and grandchildren attended the unveiling of the sign. "He was selfless, loving and funny, and if you asked him today if he'd do it all over again, I guarantee he would, 100%," Katherine Norris, Guarnieri's daughter, said according to CBS2. Officials such as Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Islip councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen along with members of the Guarnieri family and extended family. "Our deepest gratitude goes out to him and his family," Carpenter said. "May the dedication of this street in his honor, serve to remind us of the many sacrifices made by the men and women of our Town, the repercussions of which are still felt 20 years later."
